This workshop introduces students to Gothic calligraphy — a historical writing style that emerged in the medieval period and remained in use across Europe for centuries, including in books, documents, and early printed texts.
Students will learn the fundamental strokes that form Gothic letters, using ink and a broad-nib pen. Through guided exercises, they explore how line, angle, and rhythm create the distinctive structure of this script.
The workshop also offers a brief insight into the cultural history of Gothic writing and its continued presence in modern visual culture.
Students will:
practice basic calligraphic strokes and forms
learn how to handle a broad-nib pen and ink
develop control, patience, and attention to detail
explore how historical writing connects to contemporary design
Participants create their own calligraphic patterns and compositions, built from the strokes they have learned.
